Sarah Fila-Bakabadio is an historian of the U.S., and especially African Americans. Her research deals with African Americans' relations to Africa from the 19th century, including intellectual and cultural history, Black nationalisms, the Black Atlantic and the African diasporas in the U.S. She has worked on Black intellectual movements (especially panafricanism), and on the shared cultural practices between Africans and African Americans, using tools and theories from history and anthropology to analyze how various Black populations have created and maintained links between themselves.
