Peter Marquis earned his doctorate in History and Civilization from EHESS in December 2009. His dissertation, supervised by Francois Weil, is entitled « Brooklyn and "its" Dodgers. Baseball and the Making of Urban Identities in the United States (1883-1957) » (English title). It explores the interactions at work between the borough of Brooklyn and “its” beloved baseball team, the Dodgers. Drawing on the fields of urban history, cultural anthropology and sports history, this research assesses how the Brooklynites' fascination for the team shaped the borough's allegedly peculiar identity regardless of class and ethnic boundaries. A more detailed summary in English can be downloaded here. He currently focuses his research on the role played by sports in the making of “war cultures” across the Atlantic world during the course of the extended twentieth century. He teaches American studies in the Department of English at Université de Rouen, about a hundred miles northwest of Paris where he resides with his wife and two daughters.
