Jacques Portes

Jacques Portes professor in North American history at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis.

Born in 1944, he has studied at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, and holds an agrégation d'histoire, a Ph.D. and a doctorat d'État. He is an active member of the professional associations of his field in France, the United States and Quebec.

He has worked and the relationships between France and Quebec, the Vietnam War and its consequences, mass media and politics in the United States. He recently published on present-day America (États-Unis aujourd'hui : les maîtres du monde ?, Paris, Petite Encyclopédie Larousse, 2003), and on Buffalo Bill as a media figure (Buffalo Bill, Paris, Fayard, 2002). His last book is an essay on American history (États-Unis: une histoire à deux visages. Une tension créatrice américaine, Bruxelles, "Questions à l'histoire", Complexe, 2003).
