Tangi Villerbu defended on June 7, 2004 his doctoral dissertation in American history on “Space and Nation: French constructions of the story of the American West in the 19th century,” now published by the University Press of Rennes with the title The Conquest of the West: The French Narrative of the American Nation in the 19th Century.

Tangi Villerbu's field is Western History. He is currently studying it particularly through its catholic communities, especially the role of missionaries (especially French) on the construction of identities in the colonial context of the 19th-century West.
