| Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is a frontal dispute against the idea that D'Alembert would have ceased to produce interesting mathematics in the last part of his life. In fact, he had been writing the never published volume IX of his Opuscules mathématiques since 1781 untill his death 1783 and we show that new ideas, including probabilities, are still abundant in that work. The style « doutes et objections », of which he was fond since the Sixties, points out new and delicate problems none of which his century could have solved in a satisfactory way, as the later history will show. We seize this opportunity to give an inventory and a description of this volume that death prevented its author from publishing. |
