| Abstract |
Ethnomathematics is a new domain focusing on activities of traditional societies based on mathematical concepts such as numbers, forms, arrangements. Generally speaking, these activities are not associated with spoken descriptions from people doing them. It is thus difficult to analyse the way they conceive the mathematical notions underlying them. A game such as the awele played in Africa is an exception, since players can explain their strategies. The purpose of this article is to compare some mathematical properties of awele, and some explanations given by players of this game, in order to evaluate the distance between these two points of view. |

| Abstract |
Given a set of variables and a set of values, by a (relational) constraint we mean any set of functions from the former to the latter. Two special operations on constraints are considered, called existential and universal projections, because of their similarity with existential and universal quantifiers in a predicate calculus. The expressive power of both operations is explored, i.e., the general properties of the variety of constraints which may be produced starting from some initial constraint and applying those operations one or more times. A few comments are added concerning the expressive power of a larger system, comprising projective and Boolean operations (i.e., complementation, union and intersection) on constraints. |

| Abstract |
A few works have recently advocated the use of the long memory concept in modelling demography time series. However, the study of such series shows evidence for regime switching which was pointed out by demographers many years ago. As in an economic framework, one may ask the following question, what is the genuine process describing such series: long memory or regime switching? |

| Abstract |
The evolution of educational inequalities is difficult to measure. It is necessary to build an indicator of inequality but also to take into account the social changes which affect the social classes and the value of the diplomas. Whichever the statistical tool used, there is always «quantitative» democra-tization. It is not the same with «qualitative» democratization. We propose to analyze it by building a latent variable called «educational potential». We eliminate «quantitative» democra-tization by giving a relative value to the diplomas. The study of 19 triennial generations between 1920 and 1976 shows that «qualitative» democratization relates mainly to the children of the agricultural categories. This result is similar to that obtained with the log-multiplicative layer effect model. On the whole, can we speak about a «qualitative» democratization? |
