Title Ajustement du schéma par âge d'entrée en première union : le modèle Picrate
Author MATTHEWS Alan P., LECLERC Pauline M., GARENNE Michel L.
Keywords Africa, Age at first marriage, Coale-Mc Neil model, DHS survey, Event history analysis, Mathematical model
Topics Anthropology - Ethnology, Demography, Mathematical demography, Modelling
Abstract We present a new model for fitting the age pattern of entry into a new situation. The formulation of the marriage recruitment rate is simpler than in other available models, and particularly useful for computer simulation of the time-evolution of a population. The model has three parameters: a0, the starting age at event, pmax, the maximum proportion of the population at risk p(a), and rmax, the maximum value of the recruitment rate r(a). This model was tested on the entry into first union, and was compared with the widely-used Coale-McNeil model. We applied this model to the case of Zambia, and to a variety of African countries with different features. This model could also be used for fitting a variety of processes, such as first sexual intercourse, first birth, first job, first adult migration, etc

Title Methodological reflexions on non structural modelling: an approach by VAR models and their dynamic extensions
Author MEURIOT Véronique
Keywords Causality, Cointegration, Dynamic, Methodology, Non structural modelling, VAR Modelling
Topics Dynamical Systems, Methodology, Modelling, Regression, Statistics
Abstract Considering the dynamics in economic systems is a central element of the causality concept in economics. Since the Eighties, econometrics seems to be devoted to an important multidirectional investigation, brought about by the acknowled-gement of the relative failure of the estimated macroeconometric models in the Seventies. We propose an epistemological reflexion on the interest and the legitimacy of the evolution of contemporary macroeconometrics, in particular in the field of non structural modelling. It refers to the possible extensions of the models VAR but also to the new macroeconometric methods.

Title Demographic time series: long memory or regime switching?
Author BOUTAHAR Mohamed, AJMI Ahdi Noomen
Keywords ARFIMA process, Demography, Long memory, Structural changes
Topics Demography, Modelling, Process, Time Series
Abstract A few works have recently advocated the use of the long memory concept in modelling demography time series. However, the study of such series shows evidence for regime switching which was pointed out by demographers many years ago. As in an economic framework, one may ask the following question, what is the genuine process describing such series: long memory or regime switching?

Title Diachronic comparisons and substancialisatiion of variables. An example : the evolution of educational inequalities
Author MOREL Guy
Keywords Democratization, Educational level inequalities, Latent variable, Log-multiplicative model
Topics Economical and Social Inequalities, Logistic Curve, Modelling, Sociology, Time Series
Abstract The evolution of educational inequalities is difficult to measure. It is necessary to build an indicator of inequality but also to take into account the social changes which affect the social classes and the value of the diplomas. Whichever the statistical tool used, there is always «quantitative» democra-tization. It is not the same with «qualitative» democratization. We propose to analyze it by building a latent variable called «educational potential». We eliminate «quantitative» democra-tization by giving a relative value to the diplomas. The study of 19 triennial generations between 1920 and 1976 shows that «qualitative» democratization relates mainly to the children of the agricultural categories. This result is similar to that obtained with the log-multiplicative layer effect model. On the whole, can we speak about a «qualitative» democratization?

Title Statistical inference, exchangeability and multilevel approach
Author COURGEAU Daniel
Keywords Epistemological probability, Exchangeability, Frequence-type probability, Multilevel approach, Simpson paradox, Social sciences, Statistical inference
Topics Epistemology, Mathematical Statistics, Modelling, Social Sciences, Statistics
Abstract This paper is concerned with the problems of statistical inference in social sciences. In order to pass from a population to a new individual by inference, de Finetti's idea of exchangeability is useful. This is shown in a simple logit model and in a multilevel model, with a larger number of observed groups, where the Simpson's paradox arises depending on whether you work on aggregate data or on group data. The concept of exchangeability permits, by using the appropriate probabilities, to solve a number of problems arising in statistical inference. But it is necessary to use not only the data but also information inferred by other means in order to make the final inference.

Title A combinatorial method for the study of special functions
Author FOATA Dominique
Keywords Composé partitionnel, Exponential formula, Hermite polynomials, Involutionary graphs, Mehler formula
Topics Combinatorics, Graphs, Modelling
Abstract The composé partitionnel method that was introduced in Combinatorial Mathematics in the seventies was used to derive several classical identities on Special Functions. Here we show how the method, which is further described below, has distanced itself altogether from the other methods traditionally used in analysis.
