Global Challenges and Local Practices

The Fondation France-Japon de l’EHESS organizes in collaboration with the French Research Institute on Japan at Maison franco-japonaise (IFRJ-MFJ) its 10th anniversary symposium: "City Making in the 21st Century: Global Challenges and Local Practices", held on 28 November 2019 in Tokyo at the Maison franco-japonaise.

In 2050, 70% of the world’s population will live in cities. However, it is clear that urban issues are radically different in the various regions of the world. Indeed, the current context of globalization means all cities face the same issues (metropolization, transformations of mobilities, migrations, climate change, etc.), but these processes are deeply rooted in local dynamics. Therefore, this represents a real challenge for the local development of cities.

This international symposium aims to examine the relationships between the local and the global scales by discussing the ways in which metropolitan regions are dealing with new urban issues and examining the diversity of local responses. This event will bring together figures from the worlds of academia, institutions and business in order to engage in an interdisciplinary discussion on urban studies with a focus on France and Japan.
