All students holding a Master’s degree or an equivalent title requiring a minimum of 5 years of study at an establishment of higher education and the completion of a research dissertation, can enroll in the doctoral program. Students enrolled in the doctoral program belong to a doctoral school, which constitutes an independent administrative and educational body.

There are several doctoral schools at EHESS, working in partnership with other establishments of higher education.
