Commercialization of “United Front Work”: How Beijing Manipulates Cross-Strait Government-Business Relations

With China’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse, Beijing has learned to flex its financial muscles globally in order to achieve its political goals. The rise of China has also enabled the PRC to adroitly combine economic measures and ‘united front work’ in pursuit of its national interests. Hence Taiwan, whose sovereignty continues to be contested by the PRC, has been heavily impacted by China’s new strategy. This lecture will focus on the campaign known as ‘using business to steer politics’ with a special emphasis on how Beijing manipulates cross-strait government-business relations to exert its political influences on Taiwan.
