Food for Thought: Eating in an Elect Community - La nourriture pour la pensée
Nearly thousand traditions in one of the earliest Shīʿī ḥadīth compilations extant, Kitāb al-maḥāsin by Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Barqī (was active in the late third/ninth century), are devoted to food and eating. This lecture will demonstrate how different kinds of foods, as well as various phenomena related to eating, are strongly interwoven with the Imāmī-Shīʿī cosmological and historical narratives and with this community’s self-perception as God’s elect. The extensive preoccupation with food and eating from these perspectives inevitably portrays this universal issue as an essential building block of the Shīʿa’s confessional and sectarian identity. Shīʿīs, the findings in Kitāb al-maḥāsin show, do not eat just like others.

Pre-existence in the Imāmī-Shīʽī tradition: a Myth and its Implications –
The notion that events bearing far-reaching consequences for the human condition took place prior to the creation of the world and of man has been a central theme in the Islamic literary tradition. This lecture seeks to demonstrate how the raw materials of this notion in Imāmī-Shīʿī thought – namely, its expressions in the earliest literary strata: the Qurʾān and the ḥadīth – were addressed and creatively processed by thinkers of two later periods: the Buwayhid (945-1055 CE) and the Safavid (1501-1722).

Some Observations on the Phenomenon of ḥadīth qudsī in the Imāmī Shīʽī Literary Heritage
This lecture will address the question of ḥadīth qudsī as an independent sub-category of ḥadīth within the Imāmī literary corpus. It will focus on al-Ḥurr al-ʿĀmilī’s (d. 1104/1693) al-Jawāhir al-saniyya fī-l-aḥādīth al-qudsiyya which appears to be the earliest extant Shīʿī compilation entirely devoted to this sort of material. Alongside surveying the expressions of this phenomenon in general, I will concentrate on traditions in which an Imam cites God directly. Such traditions, I argue, represent a more flexible perception of the channels through which the Imams could communicate with God than the one familiar to us from theological treatises from the Buwayhid period (334/945-447/1055) onward.
